The Shop 3D Scienteers
(UPDATED)
2/24/2015
We are a group of 5 students from Pioneer Heritage Middle School in Frisco, TX. In response to the Lexus Eco Challenge, we wanted to submit a project that not only helped our community but leaves a lasting social imprint on society as a whole.
It began when we read that our city library got a 3D printer and the newspaper article invited people to bring their 3D files to print at the library. It sounded exciting! While looking for a printable 3D file, we found an article about Will.I.Am being the new head of his tech company of 3D printers called the Ekocycle Cube, that instead of using regular plastic, uses recycled coke bottles to print 3D items. !!! This excited us and we started finding our path to our project. We dug deeper and found another article about how 3D printing will be the shopping wave of the future. Instead of shopping for your cell phone accessories, toys, dishes, etc., or having them shipped to your home, you'll just pull up a file online and print it to your personal 3D printer. Imagine that! That is how Shop 3D began. On Shop 3D, you can find some of our favorite and most commonly downloaded 3D files that the web has to offer. We are using this website as a mission to promote 3D Printing as your shopping experience. Imagine all the planes that won't be flying your project from warehouse to store to your home. Imagine all the time you'll save. The future of our project lies with educating the world via our YouTube account. We 3D printed a prosthetic hand and produced a how-to video and posted to YouTube, with step-by-step instructions, so that anyone in the world who isn't a doctor or engineer can print and build and prosthetic hand to help people in their villages gain independence. Printing a prosthetic hand drives the cost down from thousands of dollars to about $50...a cheaper alternative that reduces your carbon footprint, because you don't have to order one from far away. Anyone with access to a 3d printer can "print local" and reduce their carbon footprint. Lower carbon footprint, reduced air pollution, helping those world-wide drive down the price of prosthetics, personal time saved...sounds like a no-brainer to us.
